7C Red Comes Away With 4th Place Win at Home

12/19/2011, 11:03am (CST)
By Teri Dessalet

The 7C Red team came away with a 4th place win this weekend on their home court in the bi-annual Lakeville South Tournament. Hustle and determination drove the team to two straight hard earned wins on day one with close victories over Mankato East and a talented St. Anthony team. The second day of the tournament was more problematic as we faced two tough Lakeville North teams which resulted in losses.

Game one versus Mankato East was a nail biter with a final score of 22 to 18. Teamwork was the goal as we came into this tournament and proved to be successful resulting in a season high of 32 assists. Mankato had the height advantage, but the boys were aggressive and scrapped for every ball leading to a narrow victory. Statistically, we came away with 10 steals and 28 rebounds, however, turnovers were high with 26, something we definitely need to work on.

We came away with our second win with a final score of 35-32 against a strong and athletic St. Anthony team. Rebounding, assists and aggressive play were the key to this win. St. Anthony had a last second opportunity to tie the game when a foul on a 3-pt shot attempt gave them a chance to tie it up. Fortunately for us, the free throws did not drop. The boys rebounded well with a season high of 36 and low turnovers with only 6 for the game, another season record.

Our third game versus rival Lakeville North Black, was a frustrating one and resulted in a final score of 18 to 42. Unfortunately, we were unable to shut down their star player who had over half of North's points. The overall mood coming in was low for some reason and we were unable to overcome this. We needed to give North fewer shot attempts at the basket and play more solid defense in addition to sinking our close shots.

Lakeville North Red was our final opponent in the tournament as we played in the 3rd/4th place bracket. The mood was higher as we came in and the boys came to play keeping the score close for most of the game through aggressive play. Turnovers once again plagued us with 25, but assists were a tournament high of 10 showing that they played unselfishly and shared the ball. Many or our short shots did not drop leaving us on the losing end of the game resulting in a 36-42 loss.

All in all, we are proud of the boys coming away with a 4th place win, they played aggressively and are learning the value of playing together to achieve a common goal. We need to work on consistent rebounding, making the easy shots, playing solid defense, trusting and running the plays and reducing turnovers as we go further into the season. With hard work and a belief in each other and adopting the value of teamwork they will go far.

7C Red Team Wins Consolation at LSHS

11/15/2011, 7:24am (CST)
By Teri Dessalet

The 7C Red basketball team pulled off a stunning consolation win in our first tournament at LSHS. Though inconsistent shooting, low rebounds and high turnovers plagued the team, the team gave 110% to fight for the 4th place title.

Our first game versus Shakopee was a nail biter, ending in a 28 to 26 point win due to a last second buzzer beater shot by Michael Ruble-Dessalet. An aggressive and physical team, Shakopee gave us a run for our money. Rebounds were low with a total of only 14 for the game and turnovers were high at 19, but our 9 assists and 8 steals kept us in the game. A heart pounding win and everyone storming the court as the last second shot drained was a great way to start the tournament and the entire season.

Our 2nd game versus the championship winning team Mankato East was a struggle for us. Losing 32 to 19 was difficult, however, we kept their points lower than any other team that played them and that's something to be very proud of. East was a very physical and well trained team and with the combination of them towering over us and our shots not dropping, we were unable to come back for a win. Rebounds improved with 25 for the game, but once again high turnovers (23) plagued us.

Our next game versus St. Michael/Prior Lake ended in a tough 14 to 21 point defeat. A team we should have beaten or at least been even with, slid past us due to the fact that our close shots were in and out, or just not dropping in the hoop and high turnovers (21). However, rebounding improved with 24, and 10 steals is nothing to sneeze at. We showed some real aggression and played with heart until the ending buzzer.

Giving it all you have despite the score is at times a better lesson than winning. Sometimes, things just don't go as planned, but we expect that to change as the boys get farther into the season and get a few more practices under their belts.

Our final game against Eastview was a blow-out ending in a final winning score of 50 to 36. At one point Eastview closed the gap quickly, but the boys did not let up and came away with a consolation/4th place win overall. With a tournament high 36 rebounds, 17 assissts, and 12 steals, we were amazed at how things turned around and how hard the boys played until the very end. Turnovers were kept low as well, with only 12 for the game. All in all, this game was a testament of not just what they did in the game against Eastview, but what the boys can do in the future as well. We are looking forward to improving in our shooting consistency, boxing out for the rebound, more precise passing and working the press/press break successfully, among other things.  We are also extremely proud as coaches with how much information the boys took in and utilized on the court with so few practices. To be able to learn four different offenses (32, 4 out 1 in zone, 4 out 1 in man-to-man, and Cougar), and switch them on the fly, a zone and man-to-man defense, two out of bounds plays and a press breaker is amazing in the amount of time they had to practice. Things will only get better from here on out as long as the boys decide to listen and work hard in practices.

Way to go Cougars Red!
